Spain has almost 3 million acres of planted vines; making it the most widely planted wine producing nation in the world and third to only Italy and France in wine production. Add to this the incredible food and passion of the people, and you have the wonderful foundation for a great holiday.

The country has an abundance of native grape varieties, with over 600 varieties planted throughout Spain though 80 percent of the country’s wine production is from only 20 grapes –including Tempranillo, Albarino & Garnacha.

Many of Spain’s leading vineyards are open to visitors, some hundreds of years old, and often include historical art collections documenting the extraordinary wine culture throughout the centuries.  Spanish wine producers have managed to apply a perfect combination of modern production techniques and the expertise inherited from the thousands of years resulting in a selection of wines that have added to their international prestige.

Major Spanish wine regions include the Rioja , Ribera del Duero and La Mancha, which are the three regions that I have focused on due to a combination of tourist accessible wineries and an infrastructure that is mature enough to accommodate an influx of wine tourists. These regions are primarily for tempranillo and granacha grapes. The Priorat region has newly become quite celebrated, winning awards throughout the world for rich, deeply hued wines.  I have chosen to focus on these three regions as their tourism infrastructure is as exceptional as the food and wine.
